How the Weather Works: A Hands-On Guide to Our Changing Climate

Author:  Christiane Dorion

Illustrator:  Beverly Young

Reading level:  Ages 8-12

Summary:

This study guides focus solely on weather.  It touches on basic explanations of complicated meteoroligical concepts.  It has sturdy pop-up illustrations, flaps to open, tabs to pull, wheels to turn and cardboard pop-up models that include a stunning 3-D hurricane.  It explains to young readers about extreme weather and climate change.  However, it doesn’t offer easy superficial solutions.

Review:

Once you've read this book you'll have a basic understanding of how the greenhouse effect works, what conditions affect climate, how a hurricane is formed, and why high and low pressure are so important in forecasting the weather.
Each section is so full of material that it is almost too busy. There's a lot to take in and it is easy to miss a pull a tab or wheel. There's more depth in this book than in similar guides of this nature and although it is aimed at youngsters seven and older, I think it would appeal to a younger child who has shown curiosity about the weather.
