Understanding Global Warming with Max Axiom Super Scientist

Author:  Agniesezka Bizkup

Illustrator:  Cynthia Martine and Bill Anderson

Reading level:  Ages 9-12

Summary:

In this graphic novel for young children, the Super Scientist tells the world about information about the threat of global warming.  His super powers include super intelligence, the ability to shrink to the size of an atom, x-ray vision sunglasses and a time-and space-travel lab coat.  The novel also covers important vocabulary, essential people and interesting facts.

Review:

After reading this novel, I feel that the author did a very good job in constructing the dialogue.  It was clear and appropriate for a young age group, though teenagers might find it a touch too didactical at times.  However, due to the fact that this is a graphic novel, found the dialogue dry and humorless. That is, until discovering the highly amusing pronunciation section at the back of the book.  Presented simply, and with clarity, it makes an excellent introduction to the topic of climate change. It’s part of a series of children educational books; other titles cover a spectrum of science topics, from magnetism to adaptation. These books are a great way of engaging children into science, which might not be an interesting subject to many.
