Director Zack Snyder, who made 300 and Watchmen, now turns his brash, t-crossing, i-dotting style to this likable family movie, an animated fantasy-adventure about a bunch of, well, owls. Perhaps this might never have been made were it not for Harry Potter reinventing the owl as a recognised youth fiction brand, and there's plenty here that owes a further debt to George Lucas and Peter Jackson. It also has what I can only describe as something of a Watership Down vibe. Sibling owlets Soren and Kludd fall out of the family nest and are kidnapped by a bunch of evil quasi-fascist owls called the Pure Ones, who enslave some of their captive owls as dead-eyed worker-drones, and train up others as warriors. Soren stays good; Kludd goes over to the dark side, and only the legendary "Owls of Ga'Hoole" – of whom Soren has heard his father speak – can vanquish the baddie owls. It's all very weird sometimes, but engaging: a nice half-term treat for younger children.

Review:

I was expecting a childish movie, but this in fact is for a much more mature audience, kids will not like it for sure as it is really dark. Snyder stays in lieu of his previous films with his infamous slow motion effect. The visual effects are absolutely dazzling, it nearly looks real down to the feathers. it is in fact one of the most biggest visual masterpiece ever, extraordinary splendid special effects. In short, it's one of the best animated films of the year. It's the perfect movie to bring your family (and maybe friends as well) and enjoy. Have no worries, sit back, and enjoy the ride. And seeing it in 3D is a plus, no matter what anyone else says. The ending also hints at a sequel. Hope that's a possibility as Warner Bros. has a potential new family franchise at their hands. And I hope Snyder returns as well. Story-wise, it's obviously unoriginal, but it is told very well. This is due to the animation, which is absolutely, spectacularly stunning. There is a great amount of detail in the film, especially on the owls, you can see every feather, every movement they make, every gust of wind that brushes that pass their feathers.
But I have one thing to warn parents against this movie: It's very graphical, contains many violence scenes. So if you have young children with you, be prepare to answer lots of their questions.
